In Sickness and in Health - Book Design

In Sickness and in Health - How medicine helped shape Orange's history was commissioned by Orange City Council supported by Pinnacle Health Care and Orange Regional Arts Foundation. The book takes an original approach in exploring how medicine shaped the history of Orange and the surrounding districts from the earliest days of settlement to the 21st century Base Hospital on the Bloomfield campus. Sauce Design was engaged to produce the book design and layout.

An eye-catching cover was created digitally using images of objects from the collection, fashioned into a cabinet of curios, illustrating the rich history and evolution of the medical profession in the area. The book contains many more photographs, is extensively indexed and is written by experienced local author Elisabeth Edwards. Becoming a collectable object in itself, and at 346 pages, the book was section sewn with a drawn on, matt cello glazed cover, allowing it to open flat and be poured over at the reader's ease.

The page design incorporated a hospital colour scheme, textural graphic elements such as labels and files, and layout was inspired by a text-book feel.

In Sickness and in Health is available for sale from Orange City Library.

Rachael McCarthy Catering and Food Consulting

Completed in late 2010 was Rachael McCarthy's website, which has some stunning examples of her contemporary, enticing food.

Rachael wanted a stylish and simple website to advertise her business, and give an overview of menus and the services her catering company provide. With some beautiful photography to work with, we built upon her existing logo identity and created a look and feel reminiscent of a table laid out for guests with placecards to navigate around the site.

Perusing the sample menus and selecting images from a fantastic array of canape's, cocktail food, mains, and other tasty morsels was hard work... This really was a mouth-watering project! Have a function to cater for? Check out www.rachaelmccarthy.com.au.

Rachael is based in Mudgee, NSW and services primarily the Mudgee and Rylstone area. You can sample some of her canape's at next month's Go Grazing event!

Benvoyage - Farewell!!

After four years of faithful service, last week was time for Sauce to say farewell to Ben Lovecek our wonderful web developer, who is braving the frosty weather and legging it to the other side of the world! Ben plans to tour Europe for a few months and then spend some time in England on a 'working' holiday... so if you see the man pictured left, please return him immediately to Sauce Design 59 Hill Street Orange NSW AUSTRALIA!

On a more serious note, we've seen Ben come a long way in his time with us, and we wish him all the very best on his travels. Bon Voyage Ben!

Get your Arts OutWest

Another recent addition to our design client list is Arts OutWest.

The arts and cultural development organisation decided to completely overhaul their website, in order to create a more accessible and engaging online resource for the central west. Having already mapped out the new structure and content of the site in-house, Arts Outwest engaged Sauce to design the site's look and feel.

Brief: to create a site that would clearly convey who and what Arts OutWest is, in a professional, user-friendly, easy to navigate design. A clean, white and neutral palette was chosen as a basis for graphics that represent a sense of the central west region, connection and a network of contacts and communities. Design elements reference visual, literary & performing arts, and have a sense of vibrancy and life.

The website includes a huge cultural directory, events calendar, and loads of resources for practitioners, organisations, or community members looking for cultural experiences in the region. With this in mind Sauce created a visual presence that easily directs website users via graphical cues to relevant areas of the site.

New site for Lovick Group

Another sample of our high end content managed sites is the recently launched www.lovick.com.au

A client with three distinct areas of business, Lovick Group of Companies required a solution that would logically direct their website users to the relevant service. Here's what they had to say:

"The Lovick Group of Companies is commercially competitive in all its business activities, particularly the marketing of its products and services. A relevant and cutting edge web site was required as an integral component of our business strategy. Our brief to Sauce Design was to create a website reflecting the diversity of our businesses with easy and intuitive navigation for potential and existing clients which created interest and most importantly for the site to be a measurable 'call to action', that is for our clients to contact the Lovick Group.

Sauce Design has more than met that brief."

150 Years of Local Government Orange Wiki

We're very proud to have had a hand in helping Orange City Council with the celebration of 150 years of Local Government. Sauce Design have produced a commemorative calendar, pull-up banners, and our latest offering – a wiki, to record stories about the people, places, events and services that contribute to local government in Orange.

The wiki was officially launched on 2 June 2010. Take a look at some local history here: www.150wiki.orange.nsw.gov.au

Orange City Council launch new website

This week Sauce Design is especially excited to see the launch of the new Orange City Council website, a huge project for us which has been some time in the making. Take a tour here: www.orange.nsw.gov.au

Council engaged us to redevelop the site, increasing usability, functionality and to help deliver essential information to residents and visitors in a way that is easily absorbed, logical, and easy to navigate. We provided a robust (Powersites) CMS, tailored custom development for Council and their user-specific needs, and created a fresh new design.

The look and feel reflects our beautiful 'Colour City' and presents Council information in a user-friendly notice board style. An intuitive navigation, combined with powerful search function allows users to find exactly what they need with just one or two clicks. Visitors (and residents) will find the Directory enormously helpful, having details to attractions, accommodation, entertainment, shopping and transport at their fingertips.

If you're looking for a cultural experience you'll find not only access to all of Orange City's great facilities, but also a brand new portal to Orange Civic Theatre – with a comprehensive guide to upcoming events and programs for the Subscription Season, news and more. Check out what's happening in this regional performing arts centre here: www.orange.nsw.gov.au/theatre

Artist Victor Gordon in significant art exhibition in South Africa

HOME AND AWAY: A Return To The South, Curated by Carol Brown for Ifa Lethu Foundation Constitution Hill, Johannesburg South Africa, June - July 2010. Promoted as the premier art event to coincide with the World Cup Soccer being hosted in South Africa next month.

South African born artist Victor Gordon currently living in Australia, has been honoured to have five major works represented in this exhibition. The large scale works (most are 2.25 m x 1.8m) from Gordon's installation " Behold the Land where Satan reigns" were last exhibited in Sydney in 1990 at the time of Mandela's release and the ground breaking shift towards a Democratic South Africa. The exhibition was unequivocally political and cuttingly critical of the South African Apartheid regime. Gordon had grown up and had personally experienced much of what he vividly portrayed in his art. The works are explicit and disturbingly evocative. The exhibition attracted attention at the time and SBS made an eight minute documentary of the installation. Gordon will be in South Africa at the launch of the exhibition and has been invited to be a guest speaker at a number of venues. Read more Media release
