On the basis of our services for the design of the very successful ‘@ your library’ campaign, as well as the rebranding of the ‘drug info @ your library’ service, Sauce Design were delighted to be requested to tender for the design of A quick guide to Drugs and Alcohol. Produced by the State Library of NSW, the book was to be a plain language guide to alcohol and drugs for the general community. Sauce won the contract, produced the design, and 2000 copies of this informative and valuable resource have been distributed to libraries across NSW.
Although aimed at a general community level, there were two specific target audience groups: parents and carers of young people, and secondary and TAFE students. The client was hoping for a design that would appeal to both of these groups, without appearing either too conservative or sinister, or seeming to condone drug use or suggest desirability.
Sauce created a clean, easy-to-read or flick-through text structure, using colour and graphics to highlight information. A simple, bold yet friendly colour palette ties the layout together.
The cover design proved a challenge. A collection of paraphernalia was put together, with some subtle imagery suggesting the risks or damaging effects of alcohol and drug use. This composition was applied on a light, white background. Some texture was brought in to prevent it from looking too ‘sterile’. Graphic elements of colour and texture were created using some of the content images. A balance of aesthetic appeal and caution, responsibility was eventually achieved.
